Here’s some headlines you might have seen:

“Special ops 'itching' to fight pirates”

“US crew fends off attack by Somali pirates”

“US Navy Shadows Somali Pirates Holding American Captain”

Piracy continues to increase in one of the most heavily trafficked sea-lanes for maritime trade (which means most of international trade).  From the above headlines you get a bit of the sense of how they are routinely handled and an idea of the current thinking on solutions applied to the problem.

Prevention of attacks at sea is a specialized niche within the private security industry that requires an acceptable solution to what amounts to military threats in a civilian environment.  The best solution is one that takes into account liability and the aftermath of the incident.

What do I mean by the aftermath?

First, how about this as a headline … “The Floating Crime Scene”?

Sounds like the title of cheap novel or an episode from a TV show but its very true and describes the reality of the situation after a vessel has been hijacked or otherwise attacked.  You probably will never see a news article titled or described that way but in the real word of post-incident consequences and repercussions … the “incident” does not end when the pirates have been defeated or fended off.

Companies (and other security service providers) often do not take into account that when a vessel is attacked, it becomes a crime scene.  The vessel, its personnel and the event will be investigated not only by the appropriate or responsible civilian and/or governmental authorities but by the insurance carriers and possibly the shipping lines customers (the shippers of the cargo) as well.

Triton shows clients and their security service vendor how to not only protect and serve their client and vessel, but also to preserve, process and document evidence critical to minimizing errors or oversight that otherwise would lead to a lengthy investigation that delays the ship from returning to service.

Triton helps clients establish a level of transparency in all of their operations that will complement the clients legal teams, providing accurate and credible accounts of action that are needed in every level of civil litigation. Though Triton has extensive tactical experience with Special Weapons and Tactics to deal with any threat, we stress that our greatest strength is the ability to utilize our experience to show clients how to properly plan and execute proven security methods that address and minimize exposure to liability. Our approach is different and fits the needs of each client and we do not take a "one size fits all approach."
