In the first part of this article, I talked about how current solutions available to vessel owners are centered on para-military conventional thinking.  That is normal and should be expected since most security companies of the type that are hustling to get a piece of the Maritime Security market opportunity, were founded and are staffed by ex-military Special Forces personnel.  These para-military styled companies are better suited for dealing with and responding to the types of events that their training and experience has prepared them for.  Military operations are different from civilian events that require acceptable solutions that take into account the civilian environment and exposure to liability.  Law enforcement professionals are accustomed to providing solutions to civilians within their environment and in ways to reduce liability risk.

The hard part about providing security in a civilian environment is to be able to do that while maintaining the trust of the public.  If the public believes the force we may have had to use was excessive, there will be media coverage and disruption within the community. Without compromising on safety, you have to learn different tactics and include non-lethal systems when appropriate. At Triton, we include transparency to our operations that have been learned over decades of law-enforcement experience.  Maintaining the public trust is mandatory, and this will be expected of private security companies down the road.   We at Triton feel we are ahead of the curve with respect to transparency and oversight. We are building our company from the lessons we have learned while working as law enforcement officers in large municipalities.  Our tactics have been tested in real events and defended in both criminal and civil litigation.   We will provide a level of service that commercial and private vessel owners and their companies will be comfortable with and benefit from the reduced liability exposure.  That is the acceptable solution that maritime commercial shipping needs.

Preventing an attack at sea such as the one we watched involving the Maersk Alabama can be achieved in a professional manner and with transparency.  A professional security team with extensive real life experience in deciding the level of appropriate force to use is crucial to preventing and responding to that type of attack.  We also believe having such a professional security team onboard is the best deterrent.

Triton advises clients on how to work with their security services provider or their internal personnel to project defense capability and professionalism in areas where they operate, which will help deter many attacks.  There are a number of options for threat response including deploying non-lethal weapon systems that we have extensive professional experience in using and can advise clients how to deploy them, as well as create procedures for their implementation.  We also advise on procedures and protocols concerning use of deadly force as a last resort to ensure the crew and vessel will not be taken hostage.  It is important for clients to understand that transparency and oversight needed to defend their actions to anyone who may need to see them is important in reducing exposure to liability.  Triton provides security advisory services that vessel owners need so that are ensured that their security service provider and or crews concentrate on their jobs and properly conduct collateral security duties.

As the CEO of Triton Global Services, I am committed to provide services to our clients based on my twenty years of Law Enforcement experience.  Oversight and Transparency are two areas the Security Industry will be forced to implement in the near future.  Triton, founded on those very principles, is already capable in that regard and is able to guide clients through establishing this capability with their own operations and as a compliance requirement for their security service vendor, so that the client receives the support from that vendor that will minimize risk and liability exposure for the client.
